Buffalo Sabres, First Niagara Center Renovation, Buffalo, NY
Cannon Construction Services provided the construction management and the design using a design-build delivery model for the major renovation of team rooms and associated player spaces for the Buffalo Sabres. The project scope grew to encompass a complete reorganization of a 30,000 sf area in the arena. This included the entryway to the arena ice, team lounge, team changing room, fitness center, training room, equipment room, coaching offices, visiting NHL team locker room, media dining and kitchen, Buffalo Bandits locker room, and several support spaces used by concert performers and arena personnel.
Renovations began in mid-March when the Sabres season ended and finished in time for the start of training camp. The construction period was completed in only four months, just one-third the time of a typical project this size. Fast-tracking was accomplished through innovative construction packaging and phasing, and by working closely with contractors to minimize complications and respond quickly to field issues. Through our construction management effort, the construction work valued at $8 million progressed at a rate of approximately $500,000 million per week. Overall, the final product and resulting team environment established a gold standard for other NHL team and arena facilities.
