An Ideas Based Practice

New Mexico Highlands University

Science Technology Building

Las Vegas, NM

Description

To promote research as an innovative and collaborative learning experience, functions more common to research facilities have been incorporated into the design of the teaching labs. Faculty offices are located in proximity to teaching and research labs, encouraging student interaction with faculty. Lab areas are designed for visibility, placing experimental activities on display, thus stimulating interest. The program comprises 54,000 sf for physical and life sciences studies with wet labs, dry labs and support space and 25,000 sf for the computer sciences and math departments. The lab spaces are modular, for flexibility and efficiency and can be converted from a research environment to more conventional teaching use, and vice versa. Sited prominently at one corner of the campus, the building is both a welcoming gateway to the university and a “campus connector” for students traveling the central courtyard.
