Description
The 45,000 sf science building for the chemistry and biology departments is a state-of-the-art undergraduate teaching lab with a faculty research component. A pedestrian link connects the existing Roger Bacon Science Building—housing classrooms and non-lab functions—with the new Center, creating a courtyard with beautiful mature trees. Building components include ten teaching labs, 25 basic research labs and support space for the study of cellular/molecular and general biology and physical, organic and general chemistry. Occupying a sloping hillside, topography and floor alignment were important considerations in the building design which incorporates elements of the materials palette and character of the surrounding campus. All engineering systems use repetitive modules—providing maximum flexibility for growth and change.
