Description
Funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, this adaptive reuse project transforms an existing industrial building into a state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary science and technology research facility. This 95,000 sf two-story facility houses laboratories, offices, classrooms, clean rooms and factory assembly shop areas for the electro optics technology center, high energy physics, condensed matter physics, and chemical engineering. The geometric patterns and scale of glass areas, entry features and extensive planting surrounding this fully-restored facility, creates a friendly image for the adjacent neighborhood while acknowledging building functions. The interior character is established by expressing the building technology. Normally concealed, structural, mechanical and electrical systems are exposed to evoke an aesthetic of technology that continues throughout public spaces as well as laboratories.
