Christopher Newport University

Intended to meet the intercollegiate, recreational sports, and assembly needs for this rapidly growing public university, Cannon Design provided sports planning design services for Christopher Newport University’s Freeman Center. The main component of this 160,000 sf combined athletic/recreational facility is a multipurpose gymnasium featuring a 200-meter indoor track, retractable stadium seating that can be converted to a 2,500-seat basketball arena, and full spectator and intercollegiate athletic support facilities. Adding value and flexibility to the complex, components are arranged to permit ticketed events to be held in the main multipurpose gymnasium with minimal interference to student recreation. Additional components include a fieldhouse, fitness center, multipurpose rooms, racquetball/squash courts, climbing wall, wellness center and natatorium.
