Description
Praised for success in overcoming difficult design and functional challenges, the renovation and addition to the Kirby Sports Center enhances the existing structure – a precast fieldhouse for intercollegiate athletics – while creating a new campus destination for recreational activities. Responding to site constraints, the addition takes an angled shape with an atrium that welcomes visitors at the juncture of the two wings, linking the new recreation center to the renovated fieldhouse. Dramatic curves and light-filled overviews highlight the interior spaces, which are organized along a three-story skylit gallery. Major components include a gymnasium with elevated track, exercise room, racquetball and squash courts, multipurpose rooms and a climbing wall.
