National Cathedral School

Athletic Center

Washington, DC

Description

Challenged to preserve the integrity of a site planned by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted and shared with the Washington National Cathedral, this facility capitalizes upon the contours of its sloping site, concealing 90% of its volume beneath rooftop soccer fields and landscaped berms. The above-grade entry building, residential in scale and compatible with its collegiate gothic context, features a three-story atrium with one of the tallest climbing walls in the East, a competition gymnasium with spectator seating for 400, a fitness center, and a “Hall of Fame.”
