Recreational Intramural Athletic Complex

La Jolla, CA

Description

Designed to minimize the impact of the building’s mass on the surrounding campus while capitalizing on spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and coastal mountains, the 188,000 sf RIMAC Center supports recreation and intramurals, intercollegiate athletics, performances and events for over 14,000 students on campus. Organized horizontally by pedestrian malls and vertically by a three-story atrium with light-diffusing skylight, the facility was developed on four levels to address a 90-foot slope of the site. An east-west spine links the various levels, terminating in a balcony overlooking a 4,000-seat multipurpose arena, whose concourse serves as an indoor jogging track. Other recreational components include weight/exercise rooms, racquetball/squash courts, lounge and locker facilities, and an equipment-issue area controlling access to outdoor fields.
