Description

Dubbed as a “tropical monument” to health and fitness, the University of Miami’s student recreation and wellness center creates a sense of place on campus where students, faculty and alumni can gather informally. Activity is visible throughout the facility which includes a gymnasium, racquetball and squash courts, natatorium, saunas, whirlpool, multipurpose rooms, weight room, jogging track, administrative suites, instructional kitchen, classrooms, computerized health-risk appraisal, wellness center, and outdoor courts. Activity spaces are organized around a large atrium, tropical courtyard with palm trees, brick pavers, umbrellas and tables. Abundant windows provide intriguing visual connections throughout the facility, bringing the lush tropical vegetation inside.

“...nice departure from the warehouse syndrome prevalent in this building type...It's a very big building, but well organized and scaled, especially the courtyard as the focal point. It pulls the plan together horizontally and vertically, combining different stairs and circulation to the upper and lower levels. The use of daylighting makes it a pleasant place to hang out. It's definitely one of my favorite projects.”
