An Ideas Based Practice

Boston University

School of Management and University Central Administrative Offices

Boston, MA

Description

Based on a design concept rooted in Deming’s principles of total quality, Boston University’s School of Management is designed to support the curriculum’s uniquely structured team learning/team teaching approach. Demonstrating that physical environments can effectively enhance learning, a key goal was the creation of a “one room feeling,” an environment focused around a six story atrium accessible to all that promotes spontaneous interaction and interdisciplinary cooperation among students and faculty – representative of the “management as a system” approach to the school’s curriculum. The 470,000 sf building – the single largest project ever undertaken by a school of management – contains over 22 different smart classroom configurations, and is designed as a metaphor for how management should be practiced.
