A new 64-bed mental health inpatient facility capitalizes upon its exceptional riverside location by maximizing daylighting and views to patient living spaces. The facility includes a 10-bed child/adolescent unit, two 27-bed adult inpatient units, and shared support areas. Rooms in which patients spend most of their waking hours – living spaces, dining rooms, lounges, playrooms, resource centres, and group rooms – line the river side of the building. On each unit, nurses’ stations are positioned with easy view of the unit entrance, bedroom corridors, and shared living and dining spaces. Adult and child/adolescent units occupy opposite ends of the building, ensuring clear separation of these patient populations.
