Stephen & Harriet Myers Middle School

Albany, NY

Description

The new Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School, a 140,400 sf facility serving 650 students from sixth to eighth grades fosters and inspires intellectual, physical and cultural development for both students and the community-at-large.

The three-story atrium is the life-force of the school, organizing and connecting major programmatic spaces, affording way-finding, and hosting diverse opportunities for social and educational interaction. The three-storey classroom structure adjacent to the atrium was planned with a sixth-grade “house” located on the first floor, a seventh-grade “house” on the second floor and an eighth-grade “house” on the third. A unique color theme for each academic “house” provides each grade with its own identity. An administrative suite is centered on each floor along angled corridors that counteract the experience of long runs and provide optimum student supervision. Each “house” offers generous classrooms, equipped with three to four computer stations and large exterior windows to maximize natural light.
