An Ideas Based Practice

Duxton Plain Public Housing

Duxton Plain Public Housing

Singapore

Description

The successful integration of high-rise housing within the urban landscape earned the Duxton Plain Housing Complex in Singapore design honors from the Chicago Athenaeum. This proposal concentrates the housing complex – high-rise residential towers clustered above a mid-sized housing block – on one-third of a linear site, leaving the remainder as an open garden and community space accessible to all. Standing out against the existing skyline, the towers taper to provide light and ventilation to each unit, all of which incorporate multiple variations that challenge the repetitive sameness of traditional high-density housing design concepts. Public green space engages the neighborhood park and the distribution of amenities throughout the development facilitates interaction among residents, helping to build a sense of community.
