An Ideas Based Practice

The Nichols School

Flickinger Performing Arts Center

Buffalo, NY

Description

Located on a site adjacent to a major urban park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the design for the Flickinger Performing Arts Center reflects the historic traditions of the 106 year old campus without compromising the needs of a progressive educational curriculum.

The exterior of the 500-seat main auditorium is octagonal with a circular copper drum serving as a focal point. The building facade fronting the quadrangle reflects the character and fabric of the campus and uses an octagon as a design element to visually terminate the quadrangle on that side. A column-lined perimeter surrounds the seats of the interior, facing a stage sized to mount a complete range of performance types. The stagehouse is nested in a pedimented roof structure that softens the size and scale of the building. Three practice rooms are below grade and double as additional dressing rooms for major productions.
