An Ideas Based Practice

Arizona State Hospital

Civil & Adolescent Behavioral Health Hospital

Phoenix, AZ

Description

The facility capitalizes on the area’s desert climate by externalizing the hospital’s pedestrian circulation, extending patients’ therapy into a landscaped respite and fully supporting a program that helps the patients “graduate” from the facility and into the community. The 220,000 sf complex is comprised of three residential buildings providing 200 beds, two patient treatment buildings, a medical clinic, and common areas that include a fitness center, library, coffee shop, clothing store, educational facilities and chapel. Landscaped courtyards between the buildings function as community parks while a shaded pedestrian Rehabilitation Mall provides patients with opportunities for social interaction and the refinement of personal and vocational skills. The facility projects a sense of “normalization” where patients are exposed to situations they can expect to encounter when they re-enter the world outside of the hospital.
