Description
Faced with the need to replace the institution’s original building—ill-suited to modern healthcare delivery—the Tel Aviv Medical Center sponsored an international design competition. Cannon Design’s winning submission for a new 530-bed tower positions the Institution to meet the region’s healthcare challenges on a prominent city center site 500 meters from City Hall. Rising 300 feet above grade, the tower’s unusual parallelogram configuration creates two highly efficient nursing units per floor and affords patients commanding views of the surrounding cityscape and Mediterranean coastline. Two stacked, four-story central atriums provide ambulatory patients, visitors and staff clear points of orientation. The building skin of granite, metal, and green tinted glass is highly transparent, projecting a welcoming character on the exterior and optimizing natural daylight deep within the interior. A circular lattice-like helicopter platform adds to the tower’s unique profile, creating a distinctive signature on the Tel Aviv skyline.
