UMass Memorial Medical Center

University Campus Lakeside Addition

Worcester, MA

Description

The Lakeside Wing is a key initiative in UMass Memorial Health Care’s quest to become one of the top 10 academic medical centers in the U.S., improving patient care, operational efficiency, academic outreach, and staff recruitment through state-of-the-art technology and infrastructure. This expansion program features a 60,000 sf emergency department that accommodates more than 100,000 patient visits annually, 10 operating suites, a SICU and a Center for Patients and Families. To facilitate wayfinding within the floorplate formed by the addition of 270,000 sf along the existing building’s façade, a light well bridges old and new structures, creating a spacious skylit atrium, waiting areas, library and a private surgeons’ consultation area that links existing and new surgical suites. Patient rooms, nurses’ stations and support areas are generously sized, with specialized consultation and waiting rooms, and separate pediatric waiting areas in all departments.

AIA Central Massachusetts
Award for Design
“This thoughtful design recognizes that medical centers need to provide state-of-the-art care in an environment that is also nurturing and human-centered. The location of public spaces and corridors along the perimeter walls and abundant use of natural light leads to intuitive wayfinding—maintaining a sense of connection to the outside that is so often missing in large medical complexes. The public spaces are comfortable and the medical areas are both human-scale and models of medical efficiency.”
