Description
A 10-year research initiative aimed at converting knowledge of the human genome into individualized medical treatments was the driving force behind creation of the BJC Institute of Health at Washington University School of Medicine. Located at the heart of the Washington University School of Medicine/BJH Hospital campus, the 659,000 sf research tower combines both research and hospital functions to accelerate the pace of discoveries and cures in the field of translational medicine. Shared spaces are strategically located throughout to catalyze collaboration among the six multidisciplinary research centers housed in the building. Significant space is devoted to pathology research, including tissue processing and tumor analysis; gene sequencing, mapping, and hybridization; and BSL-3 pathogen research. The project scope also encompassed development of an outdoor plaza, the campus’s largest, designed by Maya Lin, designer of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC. The facility received LEED Gold certification in 2011.
