“This is a state-of-the-art mental health program where patient dignity is important in psychiatric treatment. The design . . . does an absolutely fantastic job of taking a half-million square feet into a residential scale. ”Modern Healthcare/AIA Academy of Architecture for Health - Citation for Design Excellence
Description
Winner of an unusually exacting international design competition and three AIA citations for design excellence, Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences is the most comprehensive healthcare project of its kind undertaken in Canada in the past 25 years. The design strategy blends the positive characteristics of residential scale with the therapeutic benefits of access to nature and sunlight, while condensing the facility into a single structure for the economy of centralized operations. The Centre functions as a 325-bed “linear village” consisting of six diagnostic and treatment buildings and seven inpatient buildings, all arrayed along a 1,500-foot-long glass-enclosed gallery or “street,” complete with courtyards, main lobby, and public amenities.
