The merging of the exterior and interior landscapes, as well as the integration of indigenous materials and the use of location-appropriate decorations are quite distinctive. In addition, the gardens are very inventive … by incorporating different types of plantings and the use of gravel mulch, they used a variety of elements that were appropriate to the environment.
Description
The three-story expansion of Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center, Arizona’s largest hospital, consolidates outpatient services and creates three Centers of Excellence – women’s health, imaging, and cardiology. The addition reflects the hospital’s commitment to healing people, not just curing disease, by creating life-enhancing environments for patients, family, and staff.
Diagnostic services are consolidated into one, full-service space on the first floor that serves as a focal point for registration, diagnosis and treatment. The second floor Cardiac Center adjoins the surgical suites, with rehabilitation, invasive and non-invasive cardiology services clustered in a space with room for future growth. The Women’s Center, located on the third floor, expands to include a convenient obstetrical triage with Prenatal, Labor & Delivery Suites and patient classrooms. Each Center of Excellence is directly accessible via the appropriate level of the adjoining parking structure.
The hospital provides its community with an atmosphere that treats the mind, body and spirit. Every detail was selected to complement and reinforce the hospital’s Guiding Principles and to introduce nature into the healing environment. Therapeutic elements include healing gardens, extensive use of glazing to admit natural light, a health science library, murals and artwork.
