Creating Environments to Improve Patient Satisfaction: Lessons in Evidence Based Design

Designing the right treatment environment for the cancer patient is not so easy. This population is perhaps the most unique and challenging of any disease when considering the development of an appropriate environment. Like the tortoise and hare, cancer environments need to be designed to accommodate both the needs of the longer term patient that seeks comfort and amenities, as well as the short visit patient who desires speed and accessibility. Today Evidence Based Design is an emerging field that will ultimately provide empirical data to assist in making the myriad of decisions that are part of the design process. Mr. Pukszta explores the status of these initiatives, as well as discusses his own study results, examining how this data was applied in the design of several new centers.
