Rejuvenated Mall Strengthens Community and Draws Inspiration from Nature

Chesterfield Towne Center, Bon Air, VA

One of the retail cornerstones in the Richmond, VA area, Chesterfield Towne Center required interior renovations and enhancements that would enrich the overall mall experience for guests. CannonDesign and Rouse Properties teamed to design a space that echoes its surrounding environment and helps further establish Chesterfield Towne Center as a preferred shopping destination.

The design pulls inspiration from nearby Pocahontas State Park, Virginia’s largest state park, and evokes memories inspired by nature. Key sculptural elements in the mall’s Center Court include a fire pit and water feature while accent lighting, seating selection and interactive components create the comfortable informality of a camp site setting.

The natural environment is further interpreted through simple, contemporary design features and materials that reference nature’s primal forms. The pendant lighting fixtures throughout the facility are made up of an array of colors from deep red to vibrant yellow that extend from the fire pit at Center Court, from dark to light, similar to the color distribution of a flame. The furniture in the center court enhances user flexibility, while the smaller court areas throughout the mall provide alternative seating options. The fabrics play off the pendant lighting fixtures with a variation of texture and color.

Together, we create design solutions to the greatest challenges facing our clients and society.
