“The building has a very enigmatic presence, probably a necessity for such an occupancy. Perhaps post 9-11 pressure for secrecy precluded the presentation of interior views thus limiting the architect’s communication. The plans do give some idea of how traditional bureaucratic organization of spaces is handled on the various floors. The case for this project was not helped by some rather unfortunate exterior photographs. And yet the harmonic forcefulness of the form itself and its excellent proportions, reminiscent of some of the better works of Golusov, Lissitzky and other Russian Constructivists of the 1920s, were most convincing. It requires great creativity to make a “silk purse out of a sow’s ear” and secure government facilities present an extremely difficult problem to solve in an architecturally satisfying manner. This project advances that frontier.”

“An efficient and functionally innovative solution to a difficult problem. The organization of three modes of arrival vertically along a strong entry axis knits together the existing hospital and adjacent parking garage, creating an occupied edge along the riverfront. These stacked entries clarify wayfinding, pulling together three entry points into one conceptual idea.”

“The bold iconic device of the helipad accentuates the centeredness and the entry as an active 'hub'. The 'flowing' form of the addition emphasizes the bend in the river and actually creates pleasant-non-institutional spaces on the inside. “This major response to the campus pedestrian traffic pattern, drove the design concept. The spine is clearly articulated, and provides views into the gymnasium below. The use of contemporary industrial materials is inventive. A great deal of design thought was invested into materiality, and the result fits seamlessly with its surroundings. Quality of light is a major design consideration, with ample opportunities for natural light to penetrate the building”

“The college has a Midwest quality - familiar brick color, familiar silhouettes that are not modishly posturing, but possess a direct normalcy. The best thing about it is that it does have a ‘hit you in between the eyes agenda’ like so many buildings try to have. The building complex does not have self-conscious features that one can discuss - rather there is a sense of humility, environmental response, and appropriateness to the site.”

“A beautiful addition to an existing 1950s box building, the new curvilinear form completely transforms the previous scale of the site by creating a low-rise building that literally wraps itself around existing trees and brings the scale of the entry down to the pedestrian. The building form seems consistent with the intention of the program to ‘foster interaction across disciplines’—it literally turns in on itself to allow for cross views from one space to another.”

“This clearly deserved a “best in show” designation, the basic order of three separate yet integrated entities is beautifully conceived and credibly realized. The building has a strongly modern character and the exterior forms elegantly manifest both the interior spatial order and the intelligent modulation of daylight, the play of openings on the curved façade, seemingly whimsical at first, is highly disciplined yet still delightful.”

“This thoughtful design recognizes that medical centers need to provide state-of-the-art care in an environment that is also nurturing and human-centered. The location of public spaces and corridors along the perimeter walls and abundant use of natural light leads to intuitive wayfinding—maintaining a sense of connection to the outside that is so often missing in large medical complexes. ““A one-stop shop for behavioral healthcare—incorporating elements of acute treatment, crisis response, and inpatient care—the design nicely integrates interior and exterior presentation, with good separation of vehicular and internal traffic flow. The on-site courtroom works extremely well, limiting both the patient’s apprehension of being transported to and from judicial proceedings, and the overall risk factor placed upon the patients and the staff.

The contemporary style of the facility’s beautifully designed exterior is very appropriate for Arizona, as is its use of sustainable design elements, including the optimization of land with various levels, drought-resistant landscaping, and sun screens. The interior and exterior ‘fold into each other’ seamlessly, with the subtle but thorough incorporation of safety and security features throughout.”

“This project dissects the traditional hermetic black-box solution for film studios and turns its program into a strong formal parti of “open bars” anchored by the closed sound stage. These long horizontal bars ground the entire project in response to the landscape and out of the campus in the best of the West Coast traditions.

This is a juicy building type that every architect wants to tackle! The Film Centre is a self-conscious building in the best possible way, as the site, construction technique, conjoining of program and meaning are all equally rendered. The architects have resisted the temptation to become too literal by simply employing cinematic techniques—splicing, framing, editing, cropping—to assign architectural meaning. Rather, they have done the difficult work of expressing these attributes as architectural vision.”

“This project creates a great statement for designers in the idea of respecting a beautiful building while still finding a way to make it feel modern. It speaks to the essence of sustainability, which is not only to be concerned about what is new, but also to respect and reuse what is already there. This project demonstrates the notion that the most sustainable building is the one not built. If sustainability emphasizes ‘leave no footsteps,’ this one seems to dance.”

“...A straightforward solution that uses the repetitive forms to achieve an elegant composition. Rather than use architecture to decorate utility, the designer turns the process around, making a virtue of this direct expression of function.”

Healing Designs: Critical Pediatric Unit Combines Best of Technology and Creative Comforts
“Through design innovations such as the ceiling light shows, the healing environment of the HSCT Unit gently and playfully gives the children back some of the feelings of control and self-expression that they gave up along the way. In so doing, like all truly healing environments, it coaxes them back to the land of well-being.”

“This bold transformation takes great advantage of its context. The new entry and exercise pavilion set the tone for a remarkable evolution of the existing facility. The large, oval volume is dynamic, open, and inviting. It's easy to see how this new form and the activities it contains have inspired greater student participation and connectivity to the campus.”

“The sports and leisure center has given Texas Christian University an invigorating range of activities that enriches campus life enormously - not only for students and users, but also from the point of view of the university itself. Its transparency is an invitation to enter and explore the materials employed, the building and room volumes, and hence the use of energy, are extremely beneficial. Its high design quality can be seen from the many fine solutions that have been found for the various user groups and traffic flows.”

“...working with a very restrictive existing building on top of a hill, the design team opened up the plan by stacking program spaces on three levels, while providing the visitor and student with panoramic views of the campus...Most attractive are the volume and shape of spaces, the interaction between these spaces and the exposure of these activities to the outside...”

“Fitting seamlessly into the landscape, the space is inspired by elements found in rural architecture (metal roofs, post and beam construction, brick, and split-faced concrete block). With pastoral surroundings demanding scenic views from the inside out, ample use of glass allows visual access to the woodlands for patients, families, and staff.”

“This urban detention center manages to establish a strong civic presence in an extremely difficult project type.
