The design responds to its environment – light reflecting and building upon itself, gently illuminating the spaces within. A big budget psychiatric hospital project that earned a Citation of Merit was Cannon Design’s concept for the new St. Joseph Healthcare’s new, 204-bed inpatient/outpatient mental health facility in Hamilton, Ontario. This $280 million, in-process project was praised for its attractive and welcoming exterior, a design that reflects a growing trend of behavioral health facilities that boldly and proudly express their role and value in the community. Judges were impressed by its integration of natural courtyards and daylight, its arrangement of “onstage” (patient-facing) and “offstage” (service/business) corridors, and its “great swing bed zone between units,” a feature that will help the facility deal with wide swings in patient census.

Behavioral Healthcare
A one-stop shop for behavioral healthcare—incorporating elements of acute treatment, crisis response, and inpatient care—the design nicely integrates interior and exterior presentation, with good separation of vehicular and internal traffic flow. The on-site courtroom works extremely well, limiting both the patient’s apprehension of being transported to and from judicial proceedings, and the overall risk factor placed upon the patients and the staff.
The contemporary style of the facility’s beautifully designed exterior is very appropriate for Arizona, as is its use of sustainable design elements, including the optimization of land with various levels, drought-resistant landscaping, and sun screens. The interior and exterior ‘fold into each other’ seamlessly, with the subtle but thorough incorporation of safety and security features throughout.

Very strong. Bold and strong exterior and interior with a high level of complexity, but nicely composed.
This design truly creates a hub that welcomes the students in on all exterior entrances with an abundance of natural lighting. Overall it makes you say “Wow!”+_+Bold, exciting design. The project has a complicated site and program. This took a lot of imagination. Both the exterior and interiors are exciting. Very engaging. You’re drawn into it, both day and night.
