An Ideas Based Practice

Healthcare Design Showcases Cardiovascular and Cancer Centers

September 20, 2009

In Healthcare Design’s annual Architectural Showcase, both Brigham and Women’s Shapiro Cardiovascular Center and University Hospitals, Case Medical Center Cancer Hospital were highlighted among the best facilities in healthcare.

Brigham and Women’s Shapiro Cardiovascular Center – Boston, MA
The Hospital’s mission was to project 21st century innovation in the treatment of heart and cardiovascular diseases in a design that establishes a sensitive balance between the needs of Boston’s health sciences institutions and its residential neighbors. By consolidating cardiovascular services, the center improves the patient experience, yielding operational efficiencies and encouraging communication and collaboration among the specialists.

Guiding principles that drove the development of this transformational program included the Image of the Center, Scale of the building, Connectivity with the existing campus, creating a “sense of place”, and the implementation of best practices in Sustainable Design.

University Hospitals, Case Medical Center Cancer Hospital
Located on the University Hospitals Case Medical Center campus, the 320,000 sf Cancer Hospital triples the size of the existing hospital, consolidating activities previously dispersed among seven different locations, optimizing patient care, and fostering synergy among providers. Continuity with the surrounding campus fabric, connectivity with adjacent buildings, creation of a gateway to the campus, and clear patient wayfinding were all important design considerations, as was the integration of healing gardens. Clinical pods for cancer treatment are designed to address specific patient populations. Additional services include patient and public education programs, diagnostic imaging, infusion therapy, radiation oncology, an expanded breast center, and conference facilities.
