Fitness Center and Squash Court Facility
To accommodate increased demand, the college has undertaken a multiphased renovation and expansion of their existing athletic center that will add fitness space, workout studios, squash courts, athletic offices, a basketball arena, new locker rooms and a natatorium. Although the Squash and Fitness Center uses a conceptually similar structural system to the existing athletic facility, its interior public spaces are beautifully daylit. Designed to achieve LEED Gold certification, the building will be one of a number of LEED certified projects on campus.
The Squash and Fitness Center extends the energy of Dickinson Walk, a tree-lined pedestrian route, with four structural-steel “trees” supporting a photovoltaic glass canopy over a large, covered entry court and, inside, more steel trees supporting a glazed, skylit concourse that will eventually link all athletic activities on the site. The student commons, a skylit lobby that initiates the concourse, is outfitted with a small café and study spaces and can be configured for a variety of student activities. Adjoining the commons is the fitness center, organized on two levels with views of a major intersection. The glass-walled squash court is visible from the concourse.
