The annual AIA St. Louis Design Awards celebration is one of my favorite nights of the year. Being from St. Louis and a proud member of the city’s design community, I’m always excited to see the best work from the past year – and the people who made it possible – recognized. Fortunately, the design awards often prove especially rewarding as CannonDesign consistently brings home multiple awards.
This year proved no different for our firm as CannonDesign received an Architecture Merit Award for our work with the University of Missouri – St. Louis Recreation and Wellness Center and a Merit Award for Unbuilt Architecture for the Maryland Heights Community Center. Moreover, Alison Mendez and Jason Butz each earned awards for design sketches they created over the past year. I’ve included each of their sketches below and this St. Louis Business Journal piece highlights all the winners.
For those unfamiliar, The University of Missouri St. Louis Recreation and Wellness Center transforms a former parking lot adjacent to the student union and serves as a beacon for the institution’s commitment to student wellness in education. The center extends the campus greenway and is a connector for students traversing the campus, all while maximizing views and natural light.
The Maryland Heights Community Center rejuvenates a historical facility with valuable spaces including a multiuse theater, pre-school area, dedicated seniors area, arts and crafts room and new recreation amenities. The new center will allow Maryland Heights to continue offering key community services and introduce entirely new programming that benefits local residents.
Here is Allison Mendez drawing, “Rising Above the Mississippi” which earned a Drawing Honor Award.
Here is Jason Butz’ sketch, “Bedrooms,” which earned a Drawing Citation Award.
Congratulations to everyone who contributed to these award-winning efforts. Our firm’s commitment to design excellence inspires me each and every day, and it’s fantastic to see that commitment recognized by professional organizations and our peers. I’m already looking forward to next year’s event.
