Recently, our Buffalo office hosted a student from Autism Services to give him a front row seat to a day in the life of an engineer. Although this organization primarily serves individuals with autism, they extend their career services to anyone who may have intellectual or development disabilities. Under this umbrella of services, Autism Services provides students who are either in their last years of high school or in early years of college the opportunity to learn more about careers they may be interested in by shadowing professionals.
The student visitor came to CannonDesign with his job coach and spent half a day shadowing two of our engineers – Jason Andrews, an electrical engineer and Austin Barrett, a mechanical engineer. Both Jason and Austin worked together to give the student a thorough overview of what a position in either discipline entails, as well as showed him specifics on being an engineer in the architecture industry. They even invited Amir Rezaei to speak to him about high performance buildings and energy conservation.
Both our employees and the visiting student found this to be a successful and rewarding experience. We hope CannonDesign can continue to collaborate with Autism Services on other similar opportunities moving forward!
