MadeToAid Coalition Donates 2,200+ Cloth Masks to Help Fight COVID-19

We’re proud to share our MadeToAid coalition has donated thousands of cloth face masks to help Buffalo-area institutions protect at-risk community members during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The MadeToAid Coalition is comprised of core members CannonDesign, SUNY Buffalo and materialsIn, with numerous organizations helping in key ways including Rigidized Metals, Arc Building Partners, Fisher Price, Stitch Buffalo and others. The coalition is fueled by an incredible team of sewists and DIY-enthusiasts creating new masks each day. Those interested in sewing or helping in any way can reach out online.

“Working on the MadeToAid project has given me a sense of purpose as well as something to pass the hours during this difficult time,” explained Kyle LoConti, one of the lead sewists for the coalition. “I’m grateful to have the opportunity to be of help to the real heroes of this pandemic.”

MadeToAid prototyped a patternless-pattern for the masks sewists can replicate efficiently and then pair with 3D printed or metal clips for comfort and adjustability. The team has donated 2,286 masks to date to Evergreen Health (406), Haven House (126), the VA Buffalo Medical Center (543), People Inc. (583) and numerous other local institutions. The breakouts and contributions from individual sewists are represented below. To date, the initiative has been covered by Architect magazine, WGRZ Buffalo, Buffalo Spree and Buffalo Rising among other media.

MadeToAid Donates 580+ Masks to People Inc.
With more volunteer sewists joining the team, MadetoAid donated 580+ masks to People Inc, an organization that  helps seniors, families and people with disabilities live more healthy, independent and productive lives. This proved to be one of the team’s largest donations to date will help People Inc. continue to offer important residential, employment, community outreach, health care and recreation programs.

MadeToAid Donates 500+ Masks to VA Buffalo Medical Center and 180 to VA New Jersey
MadeToAid donated 543 masks to the VA Buffalo and 180 to VA New Jersey. This donation was driven by the team with special funding and help from Arc Building Partners and Rigidized Metals. Local artist Jozef Bajus also donated five beautiful masks that went to donors that helped fund the fabrication of stainless steel clips that make the masks cleanable and adjustable.

MadeToAid Donates 126 Masks to Haven House
Our MadeToAid team also donated 126 masks to Haven House, a protective community for women and children impacted by domestic abuse. The full coalition team contributed to this donation. During this week, the SUNY Buffalo fabrication team innovated a new stainless steel clip produced by Rigidized Metals. This clip masks the masks being produced lighter, stronger and easier to clean for users.

MadeToAid Donates 400+ Masks to Evergreen Health
The group’s first donation to Evergreen Health was aided by 100 masks directly from Fisher Price. Evergreen’s team provides medical, supportive and behavioral services to individuals and families in Western New York—especially those living with chronic illness or who are underserved. They provided early feedback on the mask design and encouraged scaling the effort.

“If these first 400 masks were the culmination of our effort, that would have been incredible. But we knew this was scalable. We are going to continue to create and deliver masks in the Buffalo area and try to replicate the coalition in other areas across the country,” Tunkey added.
