NYU Bobst Library Special Collections Earns IIDA/ALA 2020 Library Interior Design Award

New York University’s (NYU) Bobst Library Special Collections was recently awarded a 2020 Library Interior Design Award from the IIDA and the American Library Association (ALA).

The biennial competition honors excellence in library interior design and promotes examples of extraordinary design reflected through innovative concepts.

The design was directly inspired from the collections’ content, the building’s location in downtown New York City and the strong architectural character of Bobst Library itself. It respects the symmetry of the library, combining a loft aesthetic with a New York-centric downtown vibe.

Renovated spaces include a reading room that references the scalloped exterior facade and the work of the building’s architect, Philip Johnson, galleries with programmable video walls and adjustable lighting systems, and an area for researchers to store their belongings or meet for quite conversation.
