Legacy Tower is the new home of Texas Children’s Heart Center–ranked No. 1 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in pediatric cardiology and heart surgery–with expanded inpatient and outpatient capabilities to serve more children with critical congenital heart conditions.
Our Shannon Dupras, a senior interior designer in our Houston office who worked on the Legacy Tower project, authored a piece that delves into how the team blended Texas Children’s bright brand into a critical care context, through the lenses of Texas beauty and discovery. Some details include:
- The use of epoxy terrazzo flooring allowed for both durability and an impactful way to wayfind with a ribbon pattern against a neutral tones, that create “streams and trails” that lead visitors from the entrance to the welcome desk. Blue “lakes” and neutral “docks” let visitors know they are at a destination point.
- The flooring in the surgical corridor includes a vivid orange “welcome mat” along with a matching painted soffit in a light blue identifies each operating room.
- The flooring choices in the operating rooms was debated by Texas Children’s surgeons, who ultimately chose Nora’s Environcare rubber sheet for comfort, sound absorption and stain resistance.
