ArchDaily – one of the premier online publications covering architecture and design – has featured CannonDesign’s Cancer Hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Originally envisioned as a private hospital delivering only premium health care services,” the project transformed into a partnership between the public and private sector after preliminary feasibility studies determined the price of the site to be prohibitively high.
The facility is designed to include a cancer hospital, public parking, housing for low-income families, shops, gardens, and recreation space, as well as an adult education center to provide training for hospital staff. The vertically-organized center is able to weave living quarters and public amenities throughout the building without interfering with hospital operations. Construction is currently on hold due to economic conditions in Brazil, but the project remains an option for the future.
