A new article from Building Design + Construction highlights the creative partnerships and funding structures making dynamic, valuable community and campus recreation projects possible. The piece specifically focuses on CannonDesign projects including the Foglia Foundation Health and Recreation Center and the Laurier Brantford YMCA.

As the piece notes “recreation centers are popping up all over the country. Creative financing is often required to make these projects possible and provide the programming stakeholders want and need.” These approaches help minimize cost for one singular organization and maximize value for students and community members. The Foglia Foundation Health and Rec Center serves Harper College, Northwest Community Healthcare and the City of Palatine Park District. The Laurier Brantford YMCA offers spaces and services for both Wilfrid Laurier University and the Brantford Community.

Both our Colleen McKenna and Roland Lemke are quoted in the full article online. Here are brief overviews on each project.

  • The renewed Harper College Foglia Foundation Health and Rec Center offers extensive cardio and weight training space, a four-court field house for open rec and sports leagues, a jogging track, six lane pool, multi-functional programming space, and  Northwest Community Hospital Outpatient Care Center with X-Ray Suite, exam rooms, physical therapy space and more. The revitalization transforms what Harper students had dubbed “the loneliest building on campus” into a state-of-the-art dynamic hub for wellness, recreation, health education and athletics.
  • The new community recreation complex offers gyms, an aquatics centre, childcare area, youth zone for recreational, social and leadership development programs, a double gym with retractable seating, comprehensive cardio and weight training space, student lounge and health intake consultation rooms with specialized community-based healthcare programs.
