Mike Corb, AIA and leader of the Pittsburgh office, was recently featured with Anne Fullenkamp, director of design for the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, in the Pittsburgh Business Times surrounding work on Evans City Elementary School in the Seneca Valley School District. Tasked with creating a futureproof structure that will serve as a teaching tool for K-6 grade students, CannonDesign partnered with the Children’s Museum based on its previous experience creating makerspaces in libraries, as well as its consulting work.
As stated in the piece, CannonDesign was selected from 15 architectural firms, and was the only firm to suggest collaborating with a consultant. Several design elements have already been identified, including the incorporation of sustainable environments, quiet spaces, and adding health and wellness elements. The current school was built in 1933, and has had little modification since.
“One of the big priorities in this district is that the next building not be just another school or institutional square building; we could have built that three years ago and been on to our next project.” – Ann Fullenkamp
