We’re proud to share that both the University of Florida, Reitz Student Union and the University of District Columbia (UDC) Student Center have been recognized with Engineering News Record (ENR) regional Best Projects awards. The Reitz student center earned ENR Southeast’s best Higher Education/Research project and UDC received an Award of Merit in the same category from ENR Mid-Atlantic.
For those unfamiliar, each year ENR’s regional publications hold their own annual competitions to recognize the best construction and design projects in the states they cover. Design juries score each project individually and then collectively debate and discuss to determine the best projects possible. Selected projects are published in the November issues of ENR and its regional outlets.
Below are brief overviews of each project and links to their CannonDesign website profiles. Congrats to everyone who contributed to these exciting and award-winning projects.
University of Florida, Reitz Student Union
The UF Reitz Student Union was a dynamic response to a student-led campaign for the renovation and expansion of their campus union to address a growing population and aging infrastructure. The resulting space equips UF to meet student needs into the future, unites previously disconnected campus departments and celebrates the university’s brand and beloved mascot – the American Alligator.
University of District of Columbia Student Center
The new UDC Student Center is the centerpiece of a ten-year, campus-wide renovation aimed at establishing the university as a national model of sustainability while raising the school’s profile as a select four-year university. . The architectural design is composed of a combination of masonry, glass and bronze metal that modulates between the institutional nature of the campus and the pedestrian nature of the street. A clock tower rises high above the building, marking a new urban square soon to be teaming with students.
