We are thrilled to announce that UC San Diego Health’s Jacobs Medical Center and Texas Children’s Hospital The Woodlands have been awarded Healthcare Interior Design Awards from the International Interior Design Association (IIDA). The national awards competition honors and celebrates outstanding originality and excellence in the design and furnishings of healthcare interior spaces. Jacobs Medical Center won in the community hospital category and Texas Children’s Hospital The Woodlands took home an award in the pediatric category.
“Commercial interior designers play a critical role in the healthcare industry, providing evidence-based solutions that contribute to positive patient outcomes and the well-being of caregivers and healthcare employees,” said IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA, LEED AP. “This year’s winners exemplify exceptional healthcare design that puts patients and their caregivers at ease while creating positive, healing environments.”
Jacobs Medical Center is the new centerpiece of the UC San Diego Health campus in La Jolla, California. The 10-story hospital functions as three hospitals in one — housing inpatient services for high-risk obstetrics and neonatal care, cancer care and advanced surgical care.
Dubbed a “garden hospital,” the building’s organic form artistically interacts with the surrounding environment, and a number of elevated gardens bring nature up to the patient level. Furthering the connection to the surrounding landscape, the interior color palette and finishes reflect the neighboring canyon, nearby ocean, and the West Coast’s breathtaking sunsets. Each of the patient rooms are equipped with modern finishes, and an award-winning custom headwall seamlessly combines all necessary elements and equipment into one sculptural element.
The hospital also includes an impressive 150-piece therapeutic art collection conceived by philanthropist Joan Jacobs. Each floor features paintings, photographs, and sculptures by renowned artists – setting the stage for a calm and relaxing atmosphere.
Texas Children’s Hospital The Woodlands, designed by FKP | CannonDesign, is Texas Children’s second community hospital, and the first devoted to children’s care for communities north of Houston. The five-story, 60-bed pediatric hospital is linked directly to a six-story outpatient building, which opened in October 2016 and includes 72 exam rooms and clinics for major pediatric specialties. The hospital’s inpatient building features the area’s only dedicated pediatric emergency center with 25 exam rooms, 32 acute care beds, 28 critical care beds, four operating rooms and 12 radiology suites.
The interior design draws inspiration from the nature trails and play areas in the surrounding wooded neighborhoods. The “Spirit-of-the-Woods” theme features informal paths, organic shapes and textures, diffused daylighting and bright, playful colors. “We were able to create a warm, less institutional environment with an economical palette of materials,” says Steve Kopp, AIA, senior project designer. “It distracts young patients and appeals to their parents.”
