Joan L. Suchomel, AIA, ACHA, EDAC, has joined CannonDesign’s health practice as a senior vice president and senior medical planner based in Chicago. In her role, Joan will partner with healthcare clients to develop and help execute future thinking strategies and solutions.
“Joan brings an exceptional skill set of elevating a healthcare institution’s operational characteristics and their patients’ experience within exquisitely designed facilities,” said Mike Pukszta, director of CannonDesign’s Health Practice. “I’m so excited we can add Joan’s talents and expertise into our flagship office.”
Joan possesses more than 30 years of experience in practice, most recently as a principal at Eckenhoff Saunders Architects (ESA) and as a director at Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill’s (SOM’s) Chicago office. Prior to joining CannonDesign, she worked on a wide range of notable projects and comprehensive master plans for many of the healthcare industry’s leading systems.

Joan holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from Iowa State University, in addition to a certificate in strategic leadership from Loyola University. She is a frequent speaker at leading industry conferences and has been widely published on topics of healthcare design. Joan is the 2017 Past President of the American Institute of Architects Academy of Architecture for Health, where she led the creation of a strategic plan to optimize the Academy’s service to its members and its impact on the greater healthcare design community.
