We are proud to announce that the Maryland Heights, Community Recreation Center has been awarded this year’s Contract Healthcare Environment Award in the Health & Fitness Wellness Facilities category. The Community Center, located in Maryland Heights, MO, is a multifunctional space that embraces the outdoors as a key design feature.

“It’s a multigenerational space,” says David Polzin, our Executive Director of Design, and design principal on the project. “The preschool is next to the senior center, and weddings and performances are held here. How we arranged each space within the building was important for the community.”

Tracey Anderson, the Maryland Heights director of parks and recreation says, “We have users from the time we open until we close, and average approximately 16,000-plus visitors a month. Due to the center’s size, we are able to offer many programs and amenities. It truly is a gift.”

Key excerpts are below; the full story about this award-winning project can be read online, and in the November 2018 issue of Contract.

Looking to create a new hub for recreation and engagement, the civic leaders of Maryland Heights, MO – home to more than 27,000 residents – worked with CannonDesign on a highly interactive feasibility study to assess the current and future needs of citizens. The city wanted its very own center instead of the outdated facility that they were using, a converted church which lacked adequate space and was never intended to host group activities or exercise equipment. This led to strong support for a decision to create the 92,000-square-foot Maryland Heights Community Center.

This dynamic spot for sports, wellness, and engagement is situated prominently along the city’s beltway, and adjacent to an outdoor water park. It is now a favorite destination for residents, with significantly improved space and a variety of areas for local individuals to enjoy.

The building’s striking exterior was inspired by the importance of access to natural light for human health and wellness.
