Sheppard Pratt GroundbreakingLast week, Sheppard Pratt Health System held a groundbreaking for its new hospital campus in Howard County, Maryland – marking an exciting moment for the future of mental health treatment. CannonDesign has been leading the planning and design of the new 85-bed, 156,000-sf hospital on the Sheppard Pratt campus that focuses on access to nature as part of the healing process.

“Our new hospital campus uniquely positions Sheppard Pratt to meet the ever-increasing needs in our community and provide another access point for mental health, addiction services, and outpatient care. It reflects a bold step we are taking to dramatically increase offerings across the state and country,” said Dr. Harsh K. Trivedi, President and CEO of Sheppard Pratt Health System in an official press release. “With the support of our board, elected officials, and deeply committed donors, we have an opportunity to improve the lives of individuals, their families, and our broader community.”

“Sheppard Pratt is demonstrating their commitment to improving access to treatment for those in need by establishing a 40-acre campus dedicated entirely to mental health care,” said Tim Rommel, Mental Health/Behavioral Health Practice Leader at CannonDesign. “We are extremely proud to be part of this remarkable project that will not only help to reduce the stigma around mental health, but will no doubt improve patient outcomes for decades to come.”

The new facility takes advantage of the site’s serene environment with inpatient units facing one of the several heavily forested swales. The majority of the patient bedrooms and all of the on-unit therapy and activity spaces face directly into the wooded landscape to capitalize on the healing effect of nature — a core philosophy of the Sheppard Pratt Health System. On-site campus amenities include wandering walking paths, natural sitting and reflecting areas accessible to patients, staff and visitors. The campus will also include a 76,000-sf medical office building to provide outpatient and substance abuse services, as well as two building pads for future expansion.

The event was covered by several media outlets, including WMAR Baltimore and The Daily Record.

Sheppard Pratt is the largest private nonprofit provider of mental health services in the United States. The new hospital is expected to open in 2020.
