CannonDesign is excited to share that the University of Colorado at Boulder Student Recreation Center has earned LEED Platinum certification. The UC Boulder project has been a special one from the outset. When originally built in 1970, the center was touted as one of the nation’s top student recreation centers, with unique planning and spatial qualities that placed it ahead of its time. Our design efforts helped the center return to its previous stature and encompassed the renovation of 212,000 sf and three separate additions totaling 95,000 sf to transform the facility.
The UC Boulder project earned its LEED Platinum ranking thanks to numerous sustainable design features including the use of LED light fixtures, displacement air ventilation throughout the building, thermal displacement ventilation, radiant slab heating and daylight harvesting. It also incorporates a unique mechanical system incorporates an innovative heat recovery loop, which allows excess heat from a multitude of sources (including the ice arena refrigeration equipment) to be moved across the building where it is most needed.
