The award focused on how the new hospital reflects its surroundings: the natural landscape of southern Delaware, particularly the coastal features. The jury noted the wave wall in the Bayhealth lobby and how “it is a beautiful example of excellent millwork.” The exterior facade, which echoes the waves of the nearby Atlantic Ocean, also drew praise for its detail and thoughtfulness.
Also highlighted were the amount of natural green spaces on the campus for patient and staff use, as well as the interior’s “element of warmth and elegance not often found in healthcare environments… and references the natural world in what otherwise could be a sterile and clinical space.”
Bayhealth’s Sussex Campus, which opened in February 2019, was designed and delivered using Integrated Project Delivery. The new hospital includes 128 private patient rooms and an expansive emergency and trauma center, as well as a 70,000-sf outpatient center providing cancer care, rehabilitation, surgery, diagnostic services and more.
