Matthew's expertise lies in strategic planning, capital planning and implementation, operations, asset and change management, as well as sustainable and inclusive design initiatives. In his new role, he'll partner with our consulting and design teams to pursue and deliver educational projects from technical/vocational schools to community colleges to public and private universities.

“Much has changed and evolved within educational institutions over the past few years, and Matthew brings firsthand experience of guiding institutions through changes in technology, culture and space needs,” said Chris Lambert, senior vice president and strategy consulting lead at Blue Cottage of CannonDesign. “He will be a valuable asset as Blue Cottage works with colleges and universities across the country navigate the ever-changing landscape of education in the 21st century.”

Matthew spent the last 19 years at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, most recently serving as executive associate provost for capital planning. While there, he led the strategy and delivery of the university’s capital budget, led strategic sustainability efforts, steered the pandemic response, and oversaw multiple renovation and new construction projects on campus. He has an MBA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Master of Education, Leadership and Administration from University of Illinois at Chicago.

  • I'm excited to take my years of experience in higher education and translate it into helping institutions across the country find the best methods and strategies to educate students, nurture a diverse faculty and create a robust and fruitful culture of learning, research and growth both in and out of the classroom.
