University of Cincinnati Health (UC Health) has announced its largest capital project in its history, a $251 million expansion and renovation of its flagship hospital, UC Medical Center, on its Clifton Campus.

We're honored to be UC Health's design partner for this transformative project. At its heart is a renovation and expansion of UC Health’s renowned emergency department (slated to open in summer 2023) and construction of a new four-story building to increase operating room capacity (opening in early 2023). Additionally, two new parking structures will provide 1,300 parking spaces for patients, employees and visitors. CannonDesign is leading design of the project with Blue Cottage of CannonDesign leading medical planning and operations consulting.

Testimonials

  • The investments we are making in our facilities, our services and our people will help us truly transform patient care and access across our Clifton Campus. As we’ve responded to the needs of our community like never before over the past year, we’ve continued to move forward on building the future for UC Health and how we care for our region.

Three additional floors will be built above the new emergency department to house an observation unit, a flexible ICU, a shelled floor for future inpatient care use and a top mechanical floor that allows for future flexibility and vertical expansion.

The existing emergency department is 30 years old and is the region’s only Level 1 trauma center; its expansion will be built onto an adjacent empty lot. This addition will improve patient flow and capacity, and the ED renovation will allow for “surge” capacity for emergency and crisis situations. The new four-story building will house clinical support space as well as eight additional operating rooms.
