The Waukee Innovation & Learning Center (WILC) has been awarded the SxSW EDU 2019 Learn by Design Award. The project was chosen for celebrating the collaboration that takes place between designers and educators in pursuit of creating groundbreaking physical learning environments.
WILC unites educational curriculum and business acumen all under one roof. Created to host the Waukee Community School District’s Aspiring Professional Experience (APEX) program—a collaboration between education, business and the community that helps develop highly skilled, adaptable, global innovators and leaders—the facility radically breaks away from standard school design.
Departing from the traditional programming of learning environments where most spaces are designated for specific activities, the WILC was designed with the flexibility to fit a curriculum that changes annually. It was thoughtfully constructed to be a learning environment that reflects the future of learning—equipping students with the skills needed for in-demand careers and entrepreneurialism in an ever-changing economy.
I consider it a model for the school of the future. But the great thing is, it’s happening today.Tim Cook Apple CEO
