Integrated Design and Construction Accelerates a Community College’s Goals for Growth
College of the Desert is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in California and a premier two-year college for those transferring to four-year institutions. To keep up with student demand and expand its reach, we teamed up with the city of Indio and the college to create the first building on the new Indio campus. The three-story building functions as a one-stop education destination housing classrooms, science and active learning labs, meeting rooms, training space, retail offerings and administrative offices.
To ensure the college met its design, schedule and budget goals, we provided integrated design and construction services. As the architect and interior designer, we designed a building that reinforces the urban edge of the site, introduces a sophisticated design aesthetic, and follows modular dimensions to allow flexibility and reconfiguration as educational needs change. As the construction manager, we worked closely with the client’s program manager, prime contractors and the design and estimating teams in the development of project costs and constructability reviews, as well as overall coordination of construction sequencing. In the end, this integrated approach delivered a LEED Silver-certified building that achieved the college’s program and functional needs and met its budget and schedule constraints.
The successful project outcome led to several awards, including a Merit Award from the Community College Facility Coalition and a Project Achievement Award from the Southern California chapter of the Construction Management Association of America.
