Airport design plays a crucial role in the modern-day aviation industry, shaping the travel experience for millions of passengers worldwide. With airports being the first point of contact for travelers, their design significantly impacts efficiency, comfort, and overall satisfaction. LAX, one of the busiest airports in the world, has undertaken ambitious initiatives to enhance the travel experience. The ongoing LAX Modernization Program aims to improve efficiency, passenger flow, and sustainability.

As the trusted design-build partner for multiple projects, we have a long-standing, ongoing relationship with LAX and have guided them through providing world-class amenities, incorporating sustainable design elements, and embracing emerging technologies to ensure a seamless travel experience for all passengers.

The passenger tunnel located in the concourse includes ambient blue overhead lighting, terrazzo flooring, and video panels that all contribute to the overarching oceanic theme found in the terminal.

A progressive design-build feat like none other

The Midfield Satellite Concourse is located in the central area of the airfield and west of Tom Bradley International Terminal. The concourse permits greater flexibility in scheduling improvements at other facilities, reduces reliance on remote gates, and ensures a high level of service for LAX passengers during ongoing modernization upgrades. The project includes an addition, known as the ‘Gateway’, to the Bradley West Terminal in order to facilitate passenger access to the PAX tunnel. The Gateway, estimated at $35M, is an approximately 60,000 square foot addition to Bradley West with connections at the concourse and apron levels along with a mezzanine/club level and basement level that connects to the passenger access tunnel.

The multi-billion dollar concourse was delivered by a progressive design-build team including Corgan, Gensler, CannonDesign, Turner and PCL. Our progressive design-build approach co-located architects, engineers and technical staff alongside the construction and Los Angeles World Airport teams to form a cohesive design-build entity from the start of the project to its finish.

After 65 months, the team successfully delivered the largest progressive design-build project ever undertaken at LAX.

Enhancing terminals at their "core"

Additionally, we were part of the team who designed and built three new terminal cores at LAX with a contract of over $336 million. The project created two new cores between Terminals 5 and 6 and the Tom Bradley International Terminal and one upgraded connection at Terminal 7. The terminal cores, approximately 220,000 square feet, consist of new and upgraded facilities that provide staircases, escalators, elevators and walkways to connect LAX terminals with a new Automated People Mover (APM).

Designed and constructed to achieve both LEED Silver status and CalGreen’s Tier 1 certification, the project demonstrates LAX’s ongoing commitment to sustainability. The five-year design-build contract was awarded to Austin Commercial, LP. The design team was led by AC Martin in association with CannonDesign and BASE Architecture.

Strategic renovations to provide secure connections

Our team provided construction documents for approximately 3,500 sf of interior renovations along with an approximate 1,100 sf addition at Terminal 4/Gate 41. The work included selective demolition of the existing hold room along with new interior and exterior finishes, new/modified mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and security systems, and a new passenger boarding bridge.

In addition to the Gate 41 renovation/addition, we provided construction documents for a new vertical transportation core that links Gate 41/Terminal 4 with the new, $148 million Terminal T4 Connector project. The project entailed selective demolition along with a new passenger elevator, escalators, interior and exterior stairways, and new interior and exterior finishes along with new/modified mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and security systems. Both the hold room and vertical transportation cores were a design-build collaboration between Corgan, our team and Turner Construction.
