A Model for a Nation
Creating a modern vision for the mass delivery of healthcare in a rapidly industrializing part of the world, the Tata Medical Center’s Cancer Hospital is an integrated health campus embodying clinical best practices serving the people of West Bengal and eastern India. The design is contextually and climatically responsive with buildings oriented to capture prevailing winds; deeply recessed openings reducing glare yet bringing in light and extending views; and courtyards fostering interaction and wellness.
Treatment processes and patient encounters are optimized to improve patient experience and increase staff efficiency. Natural light, views of gardens, a sensitive use of materials, and carefully crafted spaces enhance the human experience. The exterior native stone facades are woven into the interior design, complemented by warm wood and exquisite art. The seamless progression from public to private spaces uplifts the spirits of both children and adult patients as they endure the physiological and psychological stresses of cancer treatment.
Through this facility, we succeed in the goal of making every cancer patient feel cared for…they have a sense of belonging.
