A Recreation Hub to Evolve a University’s Path

University of Louisville, Belknap, Campus Recreation Center, Louisville, KY, USA

Historically, the University of Louisville, Belknap campus served primarily as a commuter institution, which less than 10 years ago had only 2,000 students living on campus. Choosing to become a Research I Institution, the university needed to increase the number of student living on campus and improve the quality of student life.

The campus recreation center plays a key role in this evolution by introducing numerous features never before available on campus including a three-court competition gymnasium stacked atop a three-court recreational gym, expansive weight/fitness areas, a multiuse activity court (MAC), four racquetball courts, a fitness lab, three classrooms, outdoor artificial turf field, two multipurpose group exercise rooms, a spinning/cycling space, golf simulator jogging track, sports-club and gaming areas. The building’s transparency showcases the activities within while creating a permeable connection to a grand plaza for the campus.

The introduction of the campus recreation center has driven growth in the campus sports club program by more than 33% and recreation center usage by nearly 30%.
