Creating a Virtuous New Learning Ecology
In advance of a planned move to consolidate facilities currently housed in four locations, we partnered with Bruce Mau Design to define a transformative vision and framework that would lead to a new level of collaboration and engagement among the school’s 10 highly-diverse departments and programs.
The plan creates a vision for a “boundless” trans-disciplinary culture that would be agile and relevant for 21st century arts education.
Through a highly interactive workshop process of exploration, the planning team embraced the school’s values of community, experimentation, environmental stewardship and social responsibility to create a “virtuous learning ecology” that fueled the inspiration for the core vision. Key to this vision is crossing boundaries and enhancing the collaborative spirit, while enriching and deepening each discipline within the school.
“Be a Beacon” – a catalyst for connectivity, curiosity, creativity and change – became the spirit for the school’s transformation, bridging its century-long legacy with a dynamic future. Integrated with key operational strategies of curriculum and organization, an appreciation of the idiosyncratic nature of artistic development and strong global outreach, the vision celebrates “the next” in an environment of discovery.
The University of Oregon is ranked as the #1 design school for sustainable design practice and principles.
