Alexandra Shinewald Joins CannonDesign as New Chicago Education Practice Leader

We are pleased to announce Alexandra (Alix) Shinewald, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, joins CannonDesign as our new Chicago Education Practice Leader. In this role, Alix is responsible for the continued growth of the office’s education practice, concentrating on STEM and S&T, as well as the advancement of strategic initiatives of the firm.

“CannonDesign’s deep experience in education, rich design portfolio and extensive range of services is exceptional and offers amazing opportunities”, says Shinewald. “I’m excited to be part of CannonDesign and to bring my experience to build upon this successful framework, to continue to grow the firm’s leadership in education and to create life-long partnerships with our clients.”

Alix brings more than 20 years of experience in the A&E industry and has been highly successful in developing and leading teams, collaborating with multiple stakeholders and managing highly specialized programs to bring complex project visions to life. As part of the Chicago leadership team, she will be focused on business development and client engagement, driving continued credibility within the market.  An integral member of studio leadership, she will partner with both colleagues and teams to foster a culture of collaboration and mentorship.

“Alix, like our firm, thrives on complex project execution, strategy and providing the highest levels of client service,” said Charles Smith, CannonDesign’s National Education Market Co-Director. “She’s an incredibly strong leader, and her expertise – especially within the science and technology sector – is a welcome addition to our strong bench of education leaders.”

Alix previously co-led the higher education studio for Harley Ellis Devereaux in its Chicago office. She received a Master of Architecture from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a Bachelor of Environmental Design from the University of Manitoba, Canada.

“We’re grateful to have Alix on board. Her experience will help us continue creating progressive, innovative academic environments,” said Andrew Balster, Chicago Office Practice Leader. “She will be instrumental in identifying areas of opportunity in science and technology, research and health education spaces, which is a major focus of ours this year and in the future.”
